Strainer Filter Screen

What Is a Strainer Filter Screen?

A strainer filter screen is a filtration component designed to prevent sand, sediment, rust, metal chips, welding residues and other solid contaminants in pipelines from reaching sensitive system equipment.

It is commonly installed inside Y strainers, basket strainers and industrial filtering units. As the fluid passes through the openings of the screen, particles larger than the selected opening size are retained on the filter surface.

This process helps protect valves, pumps, meters, check valves, heat exchangers, control valves and other pipeline equipment.

Main Function

The main functions of a strainer filter screen are:

Removing solid contaminants from the fluid
Protecting pump and valve mechanisms
Supporting reliable operation of meters
Reducing pipeline blockage risks
Extending equipment service life
Reducing maintenance and repair costs
Supporting efficient system operation
Improving process continuity

A damaged, torn or incorrectly selected screen may allow contaminants to pass into the system and damage downstream equipment.

Operating Principle

Fluid enters the strainer body through the inlet connection and is directed toward the filter element. The fluid passes through the screen openings and continues toward the outlet.

Particles larger than the screen openings remain on the filter surface. As contamination accumulates, flow resistance and pressure loss may increase.

For this reason, the filter element should be removed, cleaned and inspected at regular intervals.

Construction Types
Woven Wire Mesh

Produced by weaving metal wires at controlled intervals. It is suitable for removing small and medium-sized particles.

Perforated Sheet-Supported Screen

Manufactured by supporting woven wire mesh with perforated metal sheet. The supporting layer helps the filter maintain its shape under pressure.

Cylindrical Filter Basket

Produced by forming woven wire mesh or perforated sheet into a cylindrical shape. It is widely used in Y strainers and basket strainers.

Multilayer Filter

Manufactured by combining several mesh and support layers. It is used where higher mechanical strength and controlled filtration are required.

Material Options

The filter material should be selected according to fluid type, operating temperature, pressure and corrosion conditions.

Common material options include:

Stainless steel
Galvanized steel
Brass
Copper alloys
Perforated stainless steel sheet
Stainless steel mesh with supporting sheet

Stainless steel filter screens are widely preferred due to their corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and long service life.

Opening Size and Mesh Rating

The opening size determines the size of particles that can be retained.

Smaller openings can capture finer particles, but they may increase clogging frequency and pressure loss.

Larger openings support higher flow rates but provide lower fine-particle retention.

Mesh rating refers to the number of openings within a defined length of woven wire mesh. A higher mesh rating generally means smaller openings.

The following factors should be evaluated together:

Mesh rating
Wire diameter
Opening size
Filter surface area
System flow rate
Operating pressure
Fluid characteristics
Sensitivity of protected equipment
Applications

Strainer filter screens can be used in:

Drinking and utility water systems
Heating and cooling systems
HVAC installations
Fire protection systems
Pump suction lines
Steam systems
Compressed air lines
Irrigation systems
Water treatment plants
Industrial process lines
Power plants
Chemical and petrochemical facilities
Food processing plants
Textile plants
Steel plants
Building mechanical installations

Material compatibility must be checked for chemical or aggressive fluids.

Advantages
Effective particle retention
Protection of pumps and valves
Reduced maintenance costs
Long service life
Easy removal and cleaning
Replaceable construction
Different mesh and opening options
High mechanical strength
Improved system efficiency
Custom production possibilities
Selection Criteria

The following information should be considered:

Nominal strainer size
Filter outside diameter
Total filter length
Fluid type
Operating temperature
Operating pressure
System flow rate
Particle size
Required filtration level
Material grade
Mesh rating
Corrosion risk
Filter surface area
Dimensional compatibility with the strainer body

An excessively fine screen may cause rapid clogging and high pressure loss.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Before maintenance, system pressure must be safely relieved.

After removing the filter element:

Deposits and contaminants should be cleaned.
The mesh should be inspected for tears and holes.
Cylindrical deformation should be checked.
Welded areas should be inspected.
Gaskets and sealing surfaces should be examined.
The screen should be reinstalled in the correct direction.
A leakage test should be performed.

Torn, perforated, crushed or heavily corroded filters should be replaced.
